Another quarter has come and gone, and you know what that means: Nielsen ratings are out again. The latest batch of numbers don't reveal anything wildly new, but they're still just as telling nonetheless: 44 percent of mobile subscribers in the US use a smartphone in the US. Of those, 71 percent are in possession of an Android device or an iPhone. Additionally, 56 percent of all phone purchases during the third quarter were smartphones. And -- this probably won't come as a surprise to anyone -- at a decisive 42 percent, Android remains the number one smartphone OS while Apple is still perched firmly on top as the leading manufacturer (28 percent). Nokia introduced a new member of its family of Symbian Belle-running smartphones. The Nokia 603 is a youthful looking, compact smartphone with a 3.5" ClearBlack LCD with IPS technology and a 1 GHz CPU.
The Nokia 603 screen has nHD resolution (360 x 640 pixels) and 1000 nits brightness, so it's probably the same unit that we saw on the Nokia 701. The smartphone offers quad-band 2G and tri-band 3G with 14 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA.

Couple of new Nokia phones appeared on Nokia's European website today. Rather than successors to the Nokia N9, the Finnish manufacturer has developed some variations of the C5-03, namely the C5-05 (also known as the C5-04 for the Canadian market only) and the C5-06.

All Nokia smartphones, which already got the Anna update and the ones running it out of the box, will be updated with Symbian Belle on October 26. It will be available through Ovi Suite and as an OTA update.
So, the update is coming for the Nokia's N8, C7, E7 and C6-01, as well for the E6, X7 and hopefully, the Nokia 500.

Nokia Tweet claims this information is like 100% sure. October 26 is also the day when Nokia World 2011 kicks in, so we guess we can put some money on it. We guess we'll know for sure in three weeks.

Nokia re-organization continues and the next step hits the workforce and operations. Nokia has just announced it will close its factory in Romania by the end of this year and will focus on re-organizing its other factories outside Asia - in Salo, Finland; Komarom, Hungary; and Reynosa, Mexico.
Closing the factory in Cluj, Romania, will leave approximately 2200 people unemployed. Nokia promises to help those people find new jobs though.

Additional 1300 employees from Location & Commerce (NAVTEQ, Social services, etc) Nokia division will be affected by those reorganizations. Those are spread around the world through Berlin and Bonn in Germany; Boston, Chicago and Malvern in USA; and even more cities. Nokia will close the sites in Bonn and Malvern, while the rest will be probably reduced.

Today Nokia announced through its Twitter account that it has started shipping its 700 and 701 smartphones. Those are the first handsets to run the Belle revision of Symbian and will, the Finns hope, put the start of the fightback.
Despite the very similar naming, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 are quite different in terms of hardware. The 700 is a super slim and compact smartphone with a 3.2" AMOLED, whereas the 701 comes with a 3.5" IPS LCD (which we found to be the brightest display around) and a larger and heavier body.
What those two have in common is the 1GHz processors, which give them identical performance. We had the chance to spend some time with both the Nokia 700 and the Nokia 701 prior to their launch and we were pretty impressed by what they have to offer.
So, if you are still sitting on the fence on purchasing either of those two, we suggest you take some time and check out our previews. Go this was for the Nokia 700 or that way for the 701.

Nokia phones running the new Symbian Belle software will gain more productivity applications in the form of Microsoft Office products. The first suite of tools, called Microsoft Apps, are expected by the end of the year with a widespread release in the beginning of 2012. We just stumbled upon photos of a new Nokia smartphone. The device dubbed to be the Nokia N8's successor, is said to be called N8-01 (though, considering Nokia's new naming policy the Nokia 801 seems more likely) and features a qHD screen.
The images come from this Nokia 700 hands-on video, courtesy of the Greeks from Technoblog. While testing the Belle-running 700 video player, the review runs a video, which features the unannounced smartphone with an edge-to-edge curved screen.

Nokia Maps for Symbian is one of the best SatNav apps around and Nokia’s dev team is intent on making it better. Beta Labs just released a test version of Nokia Maps 3.08 with Weather, which brings a number of improvements, especially in the UI department.

The new version offers more information before you start and while you’re driving, with an emphasis on live traffic info. It also comes with an attractive-looking dedicated weather app, which shows forecasts by the hour.

Color us surprised! It was only last week that Nokia was done with the i-dotting and t-crossing of the Symbian Anna update and now they are ready to unveil the next Symbian iteration. Called Belle, the next Symbian version will be announced in just a couple of days, when the timer set up on the Nokia Facebook page reaches zero.
The Finnish company was obviously trying to build up some hype, suggesting that we held our collective breaths as the next big thing in Symbian approaches. However, someone forgot to rename the flash presentation and it was going by "Belle teaser" initially, so there won't be many surprises when the curtain is lifted.
Of course, Nokia could always surprise us by garnishing the Symbian Belle announcement with a new Symbian handset. There have been plenty of those in the rumor mill recently, but the 1GHz Nokia 700 seems like the most likely candidate if a new handset is to be unveiled on Wednesday.
Plus, we still don't know when the Belle update will actually be seeded to users so we'd be looking forward to finding that out too. So stay tuned and we'll keep you updated.

It must feel quite good to be a Nokia N8 owner these days. First, there was the Symbian Anna update, which deals with quite a few of its usability issues and now Nokia brought the news that there's a camera update in the works for their former flagship.
The Nokia N8 camera update beta has already been released so if you don't mind a few bugs you don't need to wait anymore to get it. Just head to the Nokia Beta Labs website and take it for a spin. A registration is required though and you will need to have an N8 that's already running the Anna update.
The camera update itself is pretty major bringing a new UI that, according to Nokia, gives you faster access to essential camera controls. The UI was certainly one of the worst parts of the N8 camera and we appreciate Nokia's efforts to finally do something about it.



The other thing that got boosted by the update is video recording. The N8 finally got its video framerate cranked up to 30 fps and the continuous auto-focus features. So far, those were only available through an unofficial mod.

The way cell towers work can give a fairly accurate idea of where you are, even if you're not making a call

"What's an azimuth?" my wife asked. For some reason, visions of naval battles came to mind. Cannons being aimed, orders shouted, shots fired, smoke and billowing sails.

Other than that, I couldn't come up with much. There was nothing for it but to check Wikipedia, where I learned that it's a direction for a projection of an object (usually a star) in 3D space onto a reference plane. So, in summary, a direction.

At this point, it's best to understand what my wife does for a living. She's a Deputy District Attorney, a prosecutor, in the Fourth Judicial District in Colorado. For a long while, she's headed up the Special Victims Unit (SVU, just like on the telly) in the office, prosecuting cases where the victims are the very young, very old, or those who need special help.

Hey, Nokia fans, the wait is almost over. Nokia has uploaded the Symbian Anna firmware for E7 and N8 on its servers and the updates should start rolling out any moment now.

Nokia N8 hasn’t even received the official Anna update yet, but the most daring of its users are already rewarded with the next Symbian iteration – Belle. The files required for flashing Belle on your N8 are already available for download so if you are knowledgeable enough and decide that it’s worth voiding your warranty you might get it up and running right now.
